Case Study
Buddy of Parents (BOP)
A React Native app connecting eldercare alert devices to the people who respond.
2025 · built at GSPL
LIVEThe problem
Singapore's Alert Alarm System (AAS) initiative - a collaboration involving GovTech and iWOW - places wireless alert devices in the homes of elderly residents so they can call for help at the press of a button. The system needed a mobile app connecting those devices to the people who respond.
The approach
At GSPL, our team developed BOP, a React Native app that connects to the BOP alert devices, backed by AWS services (EC2, Lambda). When a resident presses their device's button, the signal routes to the relevant agencies - such as SCDF - and surfaces through the app.
Alongside the app itself, I produced modular system designs, block diagrams and specifications, and wrote API documentation in collaboration with GovTech and iWOW.
The outcome
Delivered as part of the AAS eldercare alert initiative being rolled out across Singapore.
Learnings
Building against hardware and multi-agency requirements: spec-driven development, formal API documentation, and coordinating with government and industry partners.
